My mother was a victim of domestic abuse. Her abuse was much like other survivors and victims, it was very well hidden. When her abuser entered her life, there were subtle signs of abuse, such as loss of friendships and isolation from family. When asked about being in danger, the answer was always a quick no and an instant change in subject. Now I am aware of practices like this from those who are suffering from abuse.
On July 4th, 2019, my mothers life was taking resulting from a domestically violent interaction that went too far. My mothers abuser was harassing young neighborhood children for playing with fireworks. With all of the strength my mom had, she did what she knew was right. My mother went outside and tried to bring her abuser back into her house to leave the children alone, knowing that disobeying could result in severe punishment from him. From that moment, his motive had suddenly changed. My mother was a kind and loving person, she was protecting children from danger. Her abuser took a firearm and took her life. After he took her life, he continued to harass and aim fire at the neighboring family. A 30 hour stand off took place with police professionals, many forced entry attempts were made without success. My mothers home was then destroyed, windows were broken, the front of the home was smashed in, and then the basement was flooded in attempting to have the abuser surrender. My mothers home was ruined, any memory, was now a tear gas covered, mold host.
We experienced a great deal of trauma during this incident. It was determined my mothers home was a public safety issue and it needed to be demolished at her cost.
I am standing with women suffering from domestic abuse. It is not a choice to be a victim of abuse. This is why my partner, Samantha, and I have created Carol's Angels and Warriors, a nonprofit organization to help women suffering from abuse leave when they are ready. You should never be responsible for your abusers actions. Our goal is to work with local organizations to make this transition as safe as possible and to make these women feel empowered and strong. We want women leaving an abusive relationship to move forward without the worry of things, such as expenses, they can't control.
